Welcome to Week 37 of your pregnancy. Congratulations, your baby is full term! You must be getting very excited to meet your new bundle of joy by now. While you wait, here’s some advice on preparing for the birth.
MOM
Week 37 is here already. Symptoms you might be having by now include heavier vaginal discharge – and you may pass your mucus plug (the small amount of thickened mucus that blocks the cervical canal leading to your uterus).
If your baby hasn’t dropped into your pelvis already, you’ll experience a greater amount of heartburn and indigestion before this happens –as the uterus is pushing on your stomach. When your baby drops you might feel what’s know as “lightening” – a heaviness in your pelvis as your baby descends. The great thing about this is that you will notice less pressure just below your ribcage – making it easier to catch your breath again.
Continue eating healthy and taking your prenatal vitamins, while also performing a perennial massage and toning exercises daily – in preparation you for labour.
Don’t be alarmed if you have strange and intense dreams. This is perfectly normal as anxiety about both labour and about becoming a parent is constantly on your mind.
BABY
Your baby is by now practising breathing movements and his or her grasp becomes firm. True signs that he or she is ready to come out!
Your baby may have reached about 36 cm in length and nearly 3000 grams in weight by Week 37 of pregnancy. It is no wonder your maternity clothes are getting snug!
DAD
Make a list of all the people you want to hear about your baby’s birth, and pass it along to a friend who can spread the news. This means you’ll only have to make one call to eventually deliver the good news – apart from those calls to your closest family, of course.
Also, make sure absolutely everything you and your partner might need can be found in the packed hospital bag. And if you haven’t bought and fitted a car seat by now, get with the programme!
Week 37 of your pregnancy has come to a close… Next week we take a look at how to tackle the waiting game. In the meantime, don’t forget to enjoy Baby’s movements and kicks – you will actually miss them once they are gone.
A pregnancy massage during the last trimester is such a treat. Or a foot massage during the last month! Make sure the spa has a pregnancy specialist.
The more people have studied different methods of bringing up children the more they have come to the conclusion that what good mothers and fathers instinctively feel like doing for their babies is the best after all. Benjamin McLane Spock
